Squoosh
Best-in-class image codecs in the browser — shrink photos without sending them to a server.
Why it matters
Squoosh is an open-source image compression web app from Google Chrome Labs. You drop an image in the browser, try codecs and quality settings side by side, and download a smaller file. Processing stays on device; the app is also available as a PWA at squoosh.app.
Most image tools still upload your file to somebody else's cloud. Squoosh runs modern codecs in the browser so founders can cut payload size for product screenshots, marketing assets, and site speed without a privacy trade. It is still the cleanest open demo of serious compression UX on the web.
How it works
Open squoosh.app, drop or paste an image, pick a codec and quality, compare before/after, then download. Everything runs locally via WebAssembly codecs in the page. Developers can clone the repo and run npm install, build, and dev for contributions.
Not a hosted compressor API. It is a privacy-first browser lab for real codecs with instant visual comparison, maintained as open source by Chrome Labs.
