Portless
Swap localhost:3000 chaos for stable named URLs like https://myapp.localhost — built for humans and agents.
Why it matters
Portless is an open-source local proxy from Vercel Labs. You run your dev server through it and get HTTPS named hosts under .localhost instead of remembering port numbers. It auto-starts a proxy, assigns a backend port, trusts a local CA, and works with Next, Vite, Expo, monorepos, Turborepo, and git worktrees. Agents and humans share the same stable URLs.
Every multi-app founder still juggles random ports, broken deep links, and agents that forget which service is on which number. Portless makes local URLs durable so demos, worktrees, and agent tools keep the same hostnames after restarts.
How it works
Install with npm i -g portless, then run portless myapp next dev or bare portless to pick up the package.json dev script. First run sets up TLS and binds 443. Subdomains cover api.myapp.localhost style splits. Linked worktrees get a branch prefix automatically so feature branches do not collide. Optional portless.json or a package.json portless key locks names for teams.
This is not another coding agent and not a tunnel to the public internet. It is local DX infrastructure: named, HTTPS, worktree-aware routes that stay put so agent tools and human bookmarks stop chasing ports.
