PhotoCraft
Open-source Photoshop in pure Rust — real PSD, GPU compositor, and every edit is a command agents can run.
Why it matters
PhotoCraft is a clean-room reimplementation of Photoshop built entirely in Rust. It ships a familiar desktop app (layers, masks, adjustment layers, type, vectors, brushes) across macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and web, with real open/edit/save for layered PSD files. Status is early alpha, but the core pitch is already concrete: same engine for humans and machines.
Founders still rent Adobe or glue brittle scripts onto web editors. PhotoCraft is a native offline engine with layered PSD fidelity plus CLI, JSON control, and MCP — so a coding agent can open, grade, and batch real design files without a SaaS middleman.
How it works
Use the native UI like Photoshop, or drive 500+ registered commands headless via photocraft-cli (single file or batch action lists). Agents can attach over MCP with photocraft-cli mcp, or talk to a running app on a loopback control channel for UI state, tools, and offscreen screenshots. Under the hood: pure-data document model, wgpu GPU compositor, copy-on-write tiles, multithreaded filters.
Most “AI design” tools are chat wrappers or Figma plugins. PhotoCraft is the editor itself — offline, MIT/Apache, PSD-native — with agent control as a first-class path, not a brittle screenshot bot on top of Adobe.
