Open Design

Open Design is a local-first desktop app (plus MCP/skills install) that turns the coding agents already on your machine into a design engine. You pick a skill and a DESIGN.md brand contract, type a brief, and get real HTML/CSS artifacts — prototypes, live dashboards, decks, images, and motion — with export to HTML, PDF, PPTX, and MP4. It ships large catalogs of design systems, templates, and plugins under Apache-2.0, with BYOK across many CLIs instead of a single vendor loop.

Claude Design made artifact-first design feel inevitable, then locked it to one cloud and one model. Founders still need brand-true prototypes, decks, and dashboards without another SaaS tax or closed skill store.

Install the macOS or Windows app from open-design.ai, or wire it into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Hermes, and peers with od mcp install. The app detects local agent CLIs, loads skills and design systems, then runs brief → direction → DESIGN.md → artifact. Filesystem-backed runs write real project files you can hand to engineering; plain API/BYOK runs can return a complete artifact block. Docker and self-host paths exist when you want a team server instead of a laptop.

Unlike Claude Design it is open and model-agnostic. Unlike Figma it ships finished code-shaped artifacts, not only a canvas. Unlike prompt-to-UI clouds it keeps brand rules in portable DESIGN.md packages and runs on the agents you already pay for.
